Deforestation and forest degradation are the major sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Nepal and the country ranks 11th in the world for GHG emissions from deforestation and other land uses. Recent developments in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) indicate that Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation and Conservation and enhancement of carbon stock and sustainable management of forests
(REDD+) presents an opportunity to promote climate change mitigation and enhance the well-being of forest-dependent communities. A successful REDD+ strategy needs to include three key elements: defining a national architecture for REDD+; ensuring national level policies to address the underlying causes of forest loss; and establishing an equitable benefit sharing mechanism that provides significant support to forest dependent communities.
